It is awards season, and that means music, film, television and theatre stars are walking down red carpets to celebrate the entertainment industry. From December through to March each year, entertainment industries of all kinds hand out awards during glamorous ceremonies that are broadcast live on television in countries around the world. The infamously long Academy Awards are held in Los Angeles, California, and are often considered the most important ceremony for actors on the silver screen. The British film industry holds their own awards in February, where actors, directors and film crews are celebrated. The results of the BAFTA’s are often considered an influence on who wins Academy Awards. Both ceremonies draw in huge ratings, as movie fans root for their favourite films and tune in to watch the impressive large-scale production of the event. Film and television lovers also have the chance to see all their favourite stars under one roof when the Golden Globe Awards air from Hollywood. Each year, millions of people tune into the live broadcast from American channels – including red carpets interviews and all the acceptance speeches. The Golden Globes feature awards for television and film productions – drawing fans of both mediums to watch the show. But it’s not only screen stars in the spotlight. Music awards including the Grammy Awards and Brit Awards are also broadcast live to music fans across the world during the hectic awards season. In 2009, the Brit Awards drew 5. 2m viewers, who tuned in to watch the performances and check out some of the year’s best music. Even stage actors have their go, with the Annual Tony Awards being held in New York near the end of March. Big names in the world of music and film attend the Tony’s, which often boast some of the best performances during award ceremonies throughout the year. Are you sure? Yep! In addition to totally wiping the slate clean with FIVE (count them) states in his win column and a clear lead over Hillary in the committed delegate count, Obama wins a Grammy. A Grammy for Pete’s sake. Is this guy on a roll or what?

The Grammy Awards were Sunday and the presidential candidate beat both former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter to win best spoken word album for his audio version of his book “The Audacity Of Hope: Thoughts On Reclaiming The American Dream. ” Clinton was nominated for his book “Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World” and Carter for “Sunday Mornings in Plains: Bringing Peace to a Changing World. ” Also nominated was Maya Angelou and Alan Alda.

As Obama and Hillary battle for the Democratic nomination for president; both have won key states, though Obama has the most recent wins, capturing the Louisiana primary and caucuses in Nebraska and Washington state on Saturday. Obama now clearly leads in the pledged delegates though he is behind in the total (including the super delegates)

Though Clinton and Carter lost, they both have won the category before (Clinton, twice). And Hillary Rodham Clinton took home a Grammy in 1996 for her audio version of the book, “It Takes A Village. ”

But come on, enough already for this Barack-Star!

Hillary is back to raising some serious money now that things look more than serious. There’s no doubt that there will be more than ONE BILLION spent on this presidential election cycle. And if Michael Bloomberg jumps in, a LOT more.

A Blessing and a Curse: Music and Lyrics From the Grammy Award Best New Artists Winners

Awards are supposed to be prestigious and much-sought after, no matter what field one is in. In music, awards serve as the validation for an artist’s talent. More than a hit song or a best selling album, an award proves that an artist (or just about anyone involved in the production of the music) has got what it takes to last in the business. Regardless if it has something to do with local talent, writing lyrics, creating music-awards are obviously important. But one award in the music industry is considered both a blessing and a curse: the Grammy Best New Artist Award. This category in the most prestigious award in the business is for artists (solo singers, groups, or bands) who attained public recognition for a particular year. The award cites general achievement-the talent of the artists and the quality of the music and the lyrics of their songs, among others. So whether an artist excels in one of these areas (music, talent, lyrics) or an artist excels generally, this category recognizes them. Yet, in the history of this category, not all winners ended up being successful in the business, despite the fact that the winners of this category are arguably talented and exemplary. In fact, a quick look at the list of winners in this category would reveal that most of them are better than some of the popular artists today. While their local talent may be subjected to criticism, their music and their lyrics were impeccably created, and the production value of their albums almost always amazing. Lauryn Hill, for instance, became a famed artist because of her first-and only-album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which won the Grammy Best New Artist Award. A former member of The Fugees, her songs and lyrics are marked with unbelievable quality. Note, for example the lyrics of her most famed hit as a solo artist, “Doo Wop (That Thing)”: “Talking out your neck sayin’ you’re a Christian / A Muslim sleeping with the gin / Now that was the sin that did Jezebel in / Who you gon’ tell when the repercussions spin. ” Although, she never followed her much acclaimed album, Hill’s songs and lyrics are still remembered until today. On the other hand, Milli Vanilli is perhaps a textbook case of artists who experienced the curse of this award. To be fair, their songs and lyrics did show sparks of brilliance. The lyrics of their song “Blame It On The Rain” used simple metaphors in more unconventional but acceptable ways. Of course, their failure later on was probably caused by the fact that the two fronts of the group did not do the actual singing. But not everyone received the awards experienced this curse. The artist who won the award after Milli Vanilli became the third best selling female artist of all time-no other than Mariah Carey. The recent recipients of the award were more privileged too, since most of them are currently having spectacular careers-Maroon 5, Norah Jones, Alicia Keyes, Carrie Underwood. These artists have great sounds and artistic lyrics for their songs. This goes to show that while an award may be important, talent (not to mention great lyrics and music) is what matters to the listening public.
